Don Giecek is a Virginia native, a graduate of James Madison University, and is the Director of the Virginia Wind Energy Collaborative (VWEC) at James Madison University. Don is currently focused on building relationships with wind stakeholders through education and outreach. Outreach activities and services are designed to assist local government, landowners, utilities, non-governmental organizations, the agricultural community, and small business enterprises in the renewable energy sector. Ken Jurman is with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy where he manages the Division of Energy’s renewable energy programs. He works closely with state and local economic development agencies to promote the growth of alternative and renewable energy manufacturing, as well as with numerous public, private and non-profit organizations to increase the demand for, and use of, renewable and innovative energy technologies. Ken currently serves on the Board of Directors as Chair of the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, the Small Wind Certification Council, and as Board alternate for the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation. He is a member of the American Solar Energy Society, and helped in the formation of the Virginia Wind Energy Collaborative — a coalition of public, private and non-profit entities created to promote the balanced development of wind energy in Virginia. Towers and Signs Occupy Planners’ Discussions

The Northampton County Planning Commission moved forward with plans for a public hearing
regarding proposed meteorological (MET) towers. The towers are designed to generate
meteorological data regarding winds in the county and could be used to determine if wind
turbines are economically viable.
Commissioner Roberta Kellam raised the issue of possible bird kills by the towers and asked if
there is any data concerning the issue. Steven Volkert, business development manager for Delsea
Energy, stated that his company had installed a MET tower in the Hallwood area and suggested
that the commissioners visit the site to see first what the tower looks like. He described the
structure as resembling a cell tower, with wind instruments on short-cross trees located at the
top.
