Wind Towers May Pose Light Pollution Threat

This graphic simulation of the Wind Turbine Generating Facilities on Poor Mountain looking to the SE toward Cahas Mountain (left background) describes a potential visual annoyance of great magnitude relative to the existing radio and tv towers on Poor Mountain. The existing radio and tv tower warning lights are somewhat annoying particularly on overcast nights and evenings. As currently proposed, the wind turbine locations spread out more toward the Bent Mountain plateau and will be more than twice as high as the radio & tv towers reach into the clouds thereby spreading the range of randomly flashing red light.

  1. I found the article in the May 2nd Roanoke Times interesting. It stated "...Industrial wind plants are the fastest growing form of alternative energy. They make eletricity without producing greenhouse gases, but how truly green they are depends on where they are located. " It spoke about the impact on migratory flyways along eastern mountain ridges where more bats and sngbirds are killed by turbines than anywhere else in the world. It talked about the Wind Resource Map of the National Renewable Energy Lab showing the greatest winds are not on land, but located off shore......In Virginia, for example, offshore winds could supply 142% of our 2007 electricity demand cmpared to 15 percent if the turbines were located on shore. Similar statistics apply to nearby states. " This was a very thoughtful article, definitely worth reading.
